No matter how many times you have been through a job search, you may still be struggling with the biggest roadblock – networking! Millions of job candidates every day sit and wonder why they have not found the job of their dreams, yet seldom do they look at their networking process.
While every excuse can be dished out to why the job offers have not come, the cold hard truth is that until you learn to network properly, and do so on a consistent basis, you may continue to fall short of your goal – finding the perfect job! Here are a few things to remember about networking:
- Think about the network of connections you already have. When was the last time you reached out and asked any of them for their advice, or simply asked them if they knew of any open positions? Most likely, you have not asked them for anything. One of the perks of a network is asking for help when it is needed. Do not be afraid to ask for help!
- Take the time to widen your network. Ask your current network who else you should connect with, and ask for an introduction, if appropriate. You should always be looking to expand your network, get new perspective, and grow your expert connections.
- Do you have a mentor? No matter where you are in your job search cycle, you should always have a mentor. Building that relationship is critical to achieving your goals. A mentor will provide you with valuable advice and is a great person who can just listen when you need an ear. It is also not uncommon to have multiple mentors today.
Could you be building the biggest roadblock of your job search? Do not get hung up on the obstacle, instead recognize it and break it down. Success awaits you just beyond the roadblocks you have set.
